Poor Adam
Women assume roles in their relationships with men. Mrs. Eva Shackle is a faithful wife and mother; Miss Lillian Moonback is Mr. Shackle's vivacious mistress. Eva tracks Lilian to her lair, strewn with lingerie, and demands she give her husband up.
Confronting each other in their roles of mistress and wife, Katharina and Heidrun's acting seemed exaggerated, verging on mime. Their ennui was almost contagious, in spite of their antipathy.
But, both actors came alive on stage in the dream sequence, after they transformed into Lilith and Eve - their archetypal characters.
(Lilith, the Biblical Adam's first wife, was banished to the moon for her willful ways. God, realizing Adam needed a helpmate, cloned Eve from Adam's DNA. But, as punishment for eating forbidden fruit from the tree of good and evil, God placed Eve under Adam's domain, with her desire to him.)
Heidrun, a lovely Eve, and Katharina, a convincing, scary Lilith, conspire to bend Adam to their will. In response, Adam does "what all men do when they feel their power is threatened," violently.
After the dream sequence, when Eva and Lilian exchange costumes and roles, the acting was natural and fun.
If only Adam knew what his wanton wife was really like!
